We have moved into the Digital Age. This is a new age of exploration and colonisation of the virtual.

Fine art is being dragged “kicking and screaming out of the century of the Fruitbat” (by Terry Pratchett [whenever]). The virtual is out there. it’s almost empty in our corner of the universe, which means that we have not met any of the virtual inhabitants – yet.

We think that we know everything. After all, we can describe things using two dimensional models, we can analyse them using scientific methods. Science is leading the way. This makes a lot of people think that the world is knowable and will give up all of its secrets.

It is my opinion that artistic entitlement has led modern art has become utterly deskilled. It has been reduced to actually selling lack of skill, one single banal idea at a time.

Is entitlement as sufficient motivation for a work of fine art?

Many “modern fine artists” seem to have given up the need to acquire skills or ideas in a world where ideas are so freely available and traded in followers. Quite a few of them market their work based simply on entitlement. They suffer for their work, or they represent a minority interest or group which is being or has been persecuted somewhere else. They’re selling “a piece of themselves”.

Fine Art needs to go back to its Roots

It is time to reconsider what art means in view of the impact of social media and digital technology.  In the 80’s and 90’s people were searching for meaning at the end of the cold war, but we really have moved on. This is the Digital Age. We are faced with too much meaning. We are bombarded with information.

The role of the artist has changed. The search for meaning involves decoding masses of virtual information. In order to deal with this change, fine art needs to go back to its roots.

At the moment art is stuck in the past  There is an idea that the work can be of any quality and consist of anything –  all that matters is the suffering of the artist in producing it! But suffering does not replace content.

Art and Artificial Intelligence

There is a link between art and artificial intelligence. It is up to the artist to discover it.

There is a link between artist and observer.

Art has to be defined and seen as art.  For example, people have recently decided that Street art and graffiti can be defined as art. the artist Banksy, is considered to be eminently bankable. his work is protected by plastic screens and may be removed from walls and sold to collectors.

Photographs of industrial wastelands from the past are now exhibited in art galleries and some fashion photographers have gained the reputation of being artists in their own right.

What is Art?

In the past there was a coterie of elite artists who controlled and defined what was seen as art. There were art academies and art salons particularly in France, who defined who was and could be considered as an artist.

This changed with the advent of mass culture. It is now possible, and even necessary, for the artist to have mass appeal.

However, it is assumed that art has been created by human hands and that is is the work of an artist. We have recently included all manner of machined objects into the world of art, but the fact of human involvement is a key to its definition of art.

Who is defined as an Artist?

The artist however, has always been self-defined.

“I am an artist because I have defined myself as an artist. ”

or

“I am an artist because I have attended art school.”

or

“I am an artist because I sell my art.”

Can art be created by an artificial intelligence?

One of the interesting things that I hear in response to any output from Artificial Intelligence is that it is not intelligent. It cannot be equal to anything that a human being can produce. It is not art as soon as we know that it is created by a piece of software.

The artist in the 21st century must respond to the virtual. The artist is one of the colonists of the virtual, showing users how to navigate and respond to this new world.

Art and Virtual Worlds

Art and Virtual Worlds.

It is time to consider how art and virtual worlds co-exist.

The digital process has had a huge impact on art.  There was controversy about the idea of photography and art in the late nineteenth century.

Artists were considered to be different from photographers and are needed to differentiate itself from the photographic process.

So how has art been affected by the existence of virtual worlds?

And how has it been affected by artificial intelligence?

What is a Virtual World?

A virtual world has several key features.

  • It has more than one dimension.
  • It exists in  digital space
  • It is view-able by an observer in the real.

We presuppose that

It has a creator, although this is not necessarily the case.

  • That there is a method for traversing the universe
  • That the real exists in tandem with the virtual (i.e. that we are not virtual beings)

The Observer

If we assume that there is a possibility of observing in both the real and the virtual we must also assume that the possibility of being or becoming an observer exists.

Does this therefore also assume that the observer is alive?

If so then we must also assume that there is life in the virtual.

Art in the Real

There is art in the real. The observer is capable of defining what they regard as art and artistic process.

Therefore we have to assume that there is art in the virtual, where similar observation, judgement and artistic process occurs.

The “Real” is a universe defined by time location and space. These are fixed and shared, and mostly unchangeable.

The “Virtual” is a created universe, where time, space and location can be played with to create alternate worlds.

Art And Digital Technology

The artist reacts to the world around them, particularly its technology. We are in the process of a technological and digital revolution.

The artist reflects on and contribute a visual response to the changes around them and this includes digital technology.

As a university lecturer, I contributed to the design of autonomous reconfiguration systems and computer games theory. My art work is a reaction to that work. It examines how the individual feels about digital technology.

Our exploration of virtual worlds has modified every aspect of life, in particular gender stereotypes and female roles
I like to put the alienation and cultural fragmentation into historical contexts.
